P1: People Skills – Connecting with Others

You cannot move people to action over the long-term unless you first move them with emotion. The heart always comes before the head. The stronger you connect with people, the greater your influence becomes with them. You also increase your credibility when people believe that you genuinely care about them. Remember, people do not care how much you know until they know how much you care. The key to connecting with others is relating to them as people. Find common ground. Always take responsibility for initiating the connection process.

Action: Do not operate in isolation. Be the first to initiate conversation with people, both on a personal and professional level. Talk about all the great things that are happening in the company and industry. Be the team’s biggest cheerleader and always give credit to others. Do not attend meetings with the attitude, “Here I am.” Attend meetings with the attitude, “There you are.” Do not be passive – be active!  Success is 85% people skills and 15% technical skills. Effective people skills require the ability to connect with others.
