Developing the Winning Edge

Developing the Winning Edge

Business is the ultimate competition. It is the world’s most competitive sport where the game and season never end. Business has become 24 x 7 x 365 x Forever. Why? Because every minute of every hour of every day, someone is out there working to kick your ass. They want to take your best customers. They want to take your best employees. They want to ultimately put you out of business, NOT peacefully co-exist with you. Moreover, the competition is no longer limited to the city or country where you do business. Competition is now coming from every corner of the globe because advances in technology have truly made the world “flat.” If focusing on the competition were not enough, you also have to keep your customers, employees and investors happy. You have to make money. The pressure to effectively balance all of these factors never ends – it is always “game time!”

Success today requires having an edge. Having an edge means possessing both the hunger and passion to consistently out-execute and out-think the competition. It means consistently out-performing your competitors on the experience and value delivered to customers. It means consistently inventing the future or knowing where the business/industry is going and being the first to lead customers to it. Having an edge means always putting customers first by making critical decisions only after you have put yourself in their shoes. It means giving customers the path of least resistance by making your products or services the best, easiest to buy and easiest to use on the market. It means always focusing on your core competency and working to be the best in the world at it before expanding the business into new areas.

What do you do if you have lost your edge and are currently moving sideways? Kick yourself in the ass! Ask yourself, What am I not doing today that I was doing when I was last on top? Once you determine what is missing, set goals and take action. Having an edge requires effort. You CAN control your effort! Do not judge your effort by the number of hours that you work. Effort is measured by results. Are you doing the right things? Are you working smart? Remember, good is never enough. Greatness is always the aspiration. Every day you can do better. Every day you can improve on something. Anticipate where competitive attacks will come from. Expect the unexpected and always be ready. If you are not working to obsolete your business, someone else is. Content leads to complacency and complacency leads to decline. Use productive paranoia to stay on the (cutting) edge.
