Top Social Sites for Content Marketing in 2012

“If content is king, then context is god.” – Gary Vaynerchuk

There is an ongoing shift in marketing from outbound to inbound. Traditionally, companies have reached buyers through advertising and cold calling (disruptive marketing). Today, buyers can control the information that they receive and how they receive it. Consequently, companies must identify signals early in the buying process and influence decision-making by sharing high-value content and knowledge. Inbound marketing is about pulling buyers to your company, not pushing products and services to them.

Helping customers find your company is the core of inbound marketing. Inbound is about creating great content and sharing it in the right context. Content means blogs, infographics, etc. Context means the subject and tone of the content is relevant to the forum. The goal is to get found by buyers with a business problem that your product or service can solve. Marketo recently created an infographic entitled, The State of Content Marketing in 2012. The section below highlights the top social sites B2B companies used this year to distribute their content. They included:

Based on the percentages above, B2B marketers are using five social sites to distribute the majority of their content. They are: LinkedIn (83%), Twitter (80%), Facebook (80%), YouTube (61%) and Google + (39%). Based on the trend in 2012, there is a high likelihood that volume on these five sites will remain strong in 2013. That said, in the coming year, there is also an opportunity to start influencing buyers on other key social sites, including SlideShare, Quora, etc. Again, context will be key in ensuring the subject and tone of your content is relevant to the particular forum.
